Between the traffic rush, run to catch the next local, hustle bustle at Chowpatti (in Mumbai), fast nightlife, and of course, to catch the next Bollywood biggie that gears up to hit the Box Office, I've always thought that Mumbaikars are forever running.
In 2008, as I was in the city that I like to call my second home, I saw Delhi giving the word "running" a new meaning. Yes, I saw all of Dilli run, and how!
The 2008 edition of the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon saw thousands of Delhiites, students, businessmen, homemakers, kids, grandparents, athletes and celebrities, step out of their warm blankets on a chilly winter morning to run. And that's when I saw Delhi hit a size healthy! As I watched from the podium, it was overwhelming to see the spirit and energy with which thousands of Delhiites thronged the starting line, while many others stood by to support them. The winter sun was bright, sunny and jolly. And so was everyone present. So much so, that I myself could not resist rising from my seat to cheer for the participants!
Speaking of participants, I was amazed at the diversity reflected at the event, wherein everyone present was participating and contributing in their own style. On one hand, there were young college students who had turned up in large groups. While some of them were there to run, the others carried fun banners, posters and pom-poms to cheer for their friends. What fun! We saw children going strong running with parents and even some couples, running hand in hand. It was amazing to see four elderly women run the entire Dream Run linking hands – they seemed to be running effortlessly, with the passion and energy of teenagers.
Having been part of this grand event two years ago, I can vouch for the fact that the concept and experience of the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon can give an adrenaline rush to anyone who loves fitness and likes keeping healthy. By any chance, are you one of them?
It's that time of the year again, the registrations for the prestigious Airtel Delhi Half Marathon are on.
