In a candid coversation, Kareena Kapoor tells Priyanka Pereira why she enjoys doing comedy and hates to watch her own films
The year 2010 hasn’t been good for you in terms of box-office success. Do you think Golmaal 3 will change it?
Golmaal 3 is the perfect recipe for a blockbuster film. Characters are more defined and more distinctive this time. Obviously, I am expecting it to be a hit.
Is your role an extension from the prequel — Golmaal Returns?
In the last film, I played a jealous housewife addicted to soaps. In Golmaal 3, I am a tomboy. My introduction scene is also on top of a car which shows that I am one of the heroes. I had made it clear to director Rohit Shetty that I am doing this film only if I have a central character. When you see the film, you will know that this role was written for me.
What is the most tomboyish thing you have done in real life?
Just doing this role. In real life, I am totally feminine.
What do you enjoy about comedy?
Comedy is tough, it is easy to cry on screen. In films like Jab We Met, 3 Idiots and Golmaal 3, I had to constantly be on my toes. It may look mindless but the performances are far from it.
With the character being so different, your wardrobe must be different too.
Manish Malhotra knew that the Patiala salwar and Mughal-e-azam t-shirt in Jab We Met had become such a rage. For Golmaal 3, he has designed t-shirts for me which have lines like ‘Jahaanpana tussi great ho’ and ‘Mind It Rascala’. This is something that the youth will like.
We Are Family was a box-office failure. What do you think went wrong?
People just don’t want to see boring movies.
So it was boring?
I haven’t seen the movie. So I cannot comment on it.
Why didn’t you see the movie?
I don’t see my own movies. I don’t like to see myself on the screen. It is for the audience to see. Some movies work, some don’t. That’s fine with me.
How much of Agent Vinod is complete?
Just 30 per cent. But it’s going to be great. It will be a first of its kind, very Bondesque. Saif (Ali Khan) and me are soon leaving for the next schedule in Delhi.
What are your upcoming films?
I start with Short Term Shaadi with Imran (Khan) in November. Then there is Bodyguard with Salman (Khan) where the heroine’s role is action-packed. Ra.One with Shah Rukh (Khan) is almost complete.
What about Heroine?
Madhur Bhandarkar is busy. He has to give me the script first.
Are you doing a film with Akshay Kumar too?
Between the four Khans, I don’t have time to work with anybody else. All my dates have been taken for the year. If I have to sign more films, I will have to photocopy myself.
After a decade in the industry, what has been the high points?
I am the only actress who has constantly reinvented herself. I don’t just rely on great makeup and clothes or a good body. I have challenged myself in different roles. You cannot mix a Kareena from one film and put her in another.
